Police wants exclusive rights to their uniform-good move

Thank goodness the authority has finally come to its senses. The decision to gazette the police uniform (Sunday Star, 18 June) is long overdue and it is really amazing that it should take so long for them to realise the stupidity and confusion it is causing. Take for instance the uniform of the MPSJ parking enforcement officer. It looks exactly like that worn by the traffic police, especially with a white stripe along the side of the trousers. From a distance you could easily mistake one for a traffic policeman. The Federal police deputy director of management (training) Datuk Mortadza Nazaren said that they are now gazetting the police uniform so that they could have exclusive rights to its use. But why in the first place should the other departments come out with a uniform that closely resembles the one that is used by the police? And why is there no law to prohibit the rampant imitation by others? Do they want the public to think that they are policemen? Probably it is a feeling of police power that they want to exude.
